Summer Reading 2024

Adventure Begins at Your Library with Summer Reading 2024! This annual program is designed for all ages to read every day, participate in special Library programs, and keep smashing our reading goals! The second prizes for every level will be available July 1st and the third prizes will be released on July 15th. The last day to sign up is July 20th, and the last day for prizes is July 27th. Creative Writing Club

Join our Creative Writing Club (Ages 18+) on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM. This summer’s dates are: July 3rd and July 17th in the Community Room! Share your literary gems with fellow storytelling enthusiasts and bond over love for the written word.

Family Friendly Films

Join us for Free Family Friendly Films every Wednesday at 1 PM in the Community Room! Get ready for a cinematic journey filled with new releases and beloved classics. Check out our lineup:

Movies on the Lawn

Get ready for an unforgettable cinematic experience under the stars as “Movies on the Lawn” makes its triumphant return this summer! Join us for an exciting lineup of beloved films showcased on our giant outdoor screen, perfect for a cozy evening with friends and family. On July 19th at 9:30 PM we will be showing Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Don’t miss out on this enchanting summer tradition—grab your popcorn, bring your blankets and chairs and set up a comfy spot right on the lawn. Concessions will be available and free! Join us for an unforgettable evening of movie magic!

Armchair Traveler Challenge

Have you ever wanted to travel to all 50 states? Take an epic journey with us this year as we visit each great state of our nation. Armchair travelers will read one book set in each state, earning state stickers and opportunities to enter the final drawing for our grand prizes. Any reader who joins us for even a portion of the trip will have the opportunity to earn small prizes along the way. Creative Writing Club

Join our Creative Writing Club (Ages 18+) on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM. This summer’s dates are: June 5th, June 12th, July 3rd and July 17th. On June 5th we will be meeting in the Activity Room, but every other date will be in the Community Room! Share your literary gems with fellow storytelling enthusiasts and bond over love for the written word.

Short Story Contest: “Oh the Places You’ll Go!”

Attention all writers aged 18 and up! Are you passionate about storytelling? Then seize the opportunity to enter Madison Library District’s Short Story Contest!

We are accepting submissions from June 3rd to June 28th. The theme? “Oh, the places you’ll go!” Based on the infamous Dr. Seuss tale of facing life’s ups and downs, tell us a story of the places you’ll go, whether fiction or non-fiction.

The grand prize? A $100 Barnes & Noble gift card! The winning entry will be announced on Friday, July 26th and showcased in our August newsletter.

Cooking the Books – Baking Yesteryear

Adult Makers Try Cooking the Books: Baking Yesteryear

Our Adult Makers had an extra sweet April activity that was a blast from the past! Cooking the Books follows a recent online trend of “Cookbook Clubs” that brings together chefs and readers alike. Our library friends each picked a recipe from B. Dylan Hollis’s Baking Yesteryear, which they’ve pointed to in the first group photo. All of their creations, apart perhaps from the avocado pie, were delicious! It was a bit harder for them to choose when we asked them to point to their favorite. We’re excited to bring our patrons future Cooking the Books activities in the future!

About the Book

Baking Yesteryear is a decade-by-decade cookbook that highlights the best (and a few of the worst) baking recipes from the 20th century. Travel back in time on a delicious decade-by-decade jaunt as Dylan shows you how to bake vintage forgotten greats. With a big pinch of fun and a full cup of humor, you’ll be baking everything from Chocolate Potato Cake from the 1910s to Avocado Pie from the 1960s. Dylan has baked hundreds of recipes from countless antique cookbooks and selected only the best for this bakebook, sharing the shining stars from each decade. And because some of the recipes Dylan shares on his wildly popular social media channels are spectacular failures, he’s thrown in a few of the most disastrously strange recipes for you to try if you dare.

Due to popular demand, we’ve rescheduled “Cooking the Books” with Adult Makers to April 19th at 7:00 PM! Calling all culinary enthusiasts ages 18 and up, let’s devour B. Dylan Hollis’s “Baking Yesteryear” cookbook. Participants must pick up the library’s copy at the circulation desk then bring it to Adult reference to claim and copy a recipe. Whip it up at home and bring a sample to share in the Community Room. Let’s savor the flavors, discuss kitchen triumphs, and maybe leave a few culinary adventures in the past. It’s a feast for foodies and book lovers alike!

Open Recital

Calling all aspiring performers! Join us for our Open Recital on April 22nd at 6:30 PM in the Community Room. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or just starting out, all ages, all skill levels, and all instruments are welcome! Don’t miss your chance to share your talents with our library community. Simply submit your application through our website to secure your spot. Participants under 18 must also have a parental permission form which is available at the circulation desk. Spread the word to your family and friends so you can perform for an audience! Children 11 and under must be accompanied by an adult. We can’t wait to listen to you!

Innovative Inventions

Stanley Yelnats III is an inventor. Are you? We’ll give you a bag of supplies that shouldn’t be a part of anything and challenge your group to create the impossible. What should you build? That’s up to you. Surprise us! Bags are limited. Sign up by Thursday, February 8th. We’ll have your bags the following Monday. Then you’ll have 11 days to get creative. Inventions will be displayed through the end of the month and posted on our Facebook page. This activity is designed for all ages!

“I Can Fix That”

Onion Sam can fix just about anything. How handy are you? Expert fixer Bryan Jacobson will show us reasonable repairs that we should feel confident to do around our own homes – and let us know when to call in the professionals. Lip Care for Kissin’ Bandits

This month at Adult Makers is “Lip Care for Kissin’ Bandits” in conjunction with our On the Same Page program featuring Louis Sachar’s “Holes.” Meet us on Friday, Feb 16 at 7:00 PM in the Community Room. Ages 18+ will create their own lip balm, which may or may not be tinted. See you there!

Take a Break Book Club

Join the Take a Break book club for ages 18+. As we delve into the layers of Louis Sachar’s “Holes,” come prepared for an open discussion. We’ll explore the intricacies of the novel and compensate for all that digging with a little hand care. You might even want to try the Warden’s special polish. Armchair Traveler Challenge

Escape From Camp Green Lake

Join us at Camp Green Lake for a limited-time escape room experience! Uncover hidden truths from “Holes” as you decipher clues, unlock secrets, and race against time to escape the Warden’s office. Free of charge, first come, first served. Sign up now! Walk-ins are welcome, but priority will be given to those with time slots. Ages 12 and up. Groups of 2-5.

Open February 27 – March 2, slots every 45 minutes between these times:

Tue-Thu. 3-7 PM
Fri. 12-5 PM
Sat. 10 AM-1 PM

Closed for Veteran’s Day

We honor our heroes this Veteran’s Day. In gratitude for their service, Madison Library District will be closed Friday and Saturday, November 10-11. No items are due, but the book drop will remain open. Thank you for your service, veterans!

Take A Break Book Club

Adult Makers

Get into the holiday spirit with our Adult Makers group! Join us on November 17th at 7 PM in the Community Room as we create beautiful cross-stitched Christmas ornaments on perforated paper. It’s the perfect way to add a personal touch to your holiday decorations!

Creative Writing Club

Adult Makers

Ages 18+ are invited to join Adult Makers at the Library! This month we will be making paper kites. Meet on Friday, October 20 at 7 PM in the Community Room.

Free Family Films

Free Family Films for all ages! Fridays at 3:30 PM in the Community Room! Oct. 6 is Oliver & Company, Oct. 13 is The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, and Oct. 20 is 101 Dalmatians. Children under 12 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older. Parents, please prescreen films to determine if it is appropriate for your child.

Open Recital!
