Have you heard about subscription services like OwlCrate or Litjoy?

For a monthly fee, these services send you a package containing one book and a few treats to go along with it. We are offering a similar service just for teens ages 12 – 18! Best of all, our service is completely FREE!

Here’s how it works:

If you would like to get one of these boxes, you must sign up online before the 25th of the month. Boxes will be available around the 1st of the next month. Each box will contain one surprise book (selected especially for you based on your input) and a few fun surprises.

We will notify you when your box is ready. Boxes can be picked up at the Madison Library District’s Circulation Desk and checked out with your library card. You will have until the 15th of that month to pick up your book box. If you do not pick your box up, you will forfeit your place in the subscription list and must reapply.

When you’re done with your book, please return it to the Library. It will be due back at the Library three weeks after you check it out. The rest of the box’s contents are yours to keep!

Registration is limited to 18 participants each month, but a waiting list will be kept for those interested in joining the program when room allows. Your registration will be valid for 3 months and then must be resubmitted in order to give those on the waiting list an opportunity to use the service.

Teens, ages 12-18, are invited to participate in this year’s Teen Reading Challenge, a statewide program from the Idaho Commission for Libraries.

In order to complete the challenge, you must read 8 books in 10 different categories between October 2024 and April 2025. You can choose from the following categories:

• New Genre: try a new genre.
• Sports Book: read a book about or featuring a sport.
• Memoir/Biography: read a book by or about a real person.
• Same Book as a Friend: read the same books as one of your friends.
• Setting You Want to Visit: read a book set somewhere you want to visit.
• Mystery: read a book with a mystery.
• 1-Star Review: read a book with a 1-star review.
• Look to the Future: read a book that makes you think about the future.
• Help Yourself: read a book that helps you learn something new.
• Free Choice: read whatever you want!

Tracking Progress

Track your challenge progress on the Beanstack website or app. There are also paper tracking sheets, reading journals, and bookmarks available for pick-up at the Madison Library Circulation Desk, Madison Jr. High Library, or Madison High School Library.

Prizes

Visit the Madison Library District Children's Reference Desk after each book read for the challenge to receive a small prize! You can also pick up prizes during the visiting librarian day at the school libraries. Everyone who completes the challenge will be entered into a drawing which will take place on May 1.

Teens must be registered in Beanstack to win prizes in the drawings. If you are tracking the challenge on paper outside of Beanstack, please make sure to visit Madison Library District to have your challenge progress entered in Beanstack for a chance to win!

The Concept is Simple, the Rewards are Priceless!

The key is perseverance. Make it exciting.  Are you ready to get started?

Here’s how it works:

• Pick up a tracking log at the library’s Circulation Desk.
• Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler.
• Fill out a circle for each book you read. Each tracker has 100 circles.
• Once your log is completed, come get a sticker or a small book from the library.
• When you have completed 10 sheets, you’ve read 1000 books!

The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started).
