International Observe the Moon Night

Join fellow moon lovers (or Selenophiles) to observe the moon.
Friday, October 15th, at 7pm. Masks are requested.

From NASA: “International Observe the Moon Night occurs annually in September or October, when the Moon is around first quarter ― a great phase for evening observing. Furthermore, a first-quarter Moon offers excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator (the line between night and day), where shadows enhance the Moon’s cratered landscape.”

The Library Book Club will next meet on Thursday, October 21st, at 6:30pm.

The book will be The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley:

It is the summer of 1950–and at the once-grand mansion of Buckshaw, young Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is intrigued by a series of inexplicable events: A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Then, hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”

Copies are available at the Front Circulation Desk.

Adult Summer Reading

Explore
Tails and Tales at the Library this summer by researching animals in all their habitats. Each time you complete a “Research Area” by reading 1000 pages of your choice, bring your log into the Library for a small reward.
If you successfully complete all Research by reading 3000 pages before Saturday, July 31st, you’ll be entered into our final drawings and receive five $1 coupons to use towards any unfortunate future fine incidents that may occur.
Come join your fellow community members on Thursday, June 17th at 6:30 p.m. for a lively discussion of both classic works and modern masterpieces.

Our book for June is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein:

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn’t simply about going fast. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life … as only a dog could tell it.

Reading copies are available to check out at the Circulation Desk.

Come join your fellow community members on Thursday, April 15th at 6:30 p.m. for a lively discussion of both classic works and modern masterpieces.

Our book for April is The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim:

A recipe for happiness: four women, one medieval Italian castle, plenty of wisteria, and solitude as needed.

The women at the center of The Enchanted April are alike only in their dissatisfaction with their everyday lives. They find each other—and the castle of their dreams—through a classified ad in a London newspaper one rainy February afternoon. The ladies expect a pleasant holiday, but they don’t anticipate that the month they spend in Portofino will reintroduce them to their true natures and reacquaint them with joy. Now, if the same transformation can be worked on their husbands and lovers, the enchantment will be complete.

Reading copies are available to check out at the Circulation Desk.
