OCTOBER Book Babies + Toddler Time: Opposites

OCTOBER Book Babies + Toddler Time: Opposites

Children love learning about the world around them, and using concept words with compare/contrast are a great way to help them see things differently. So, try talking about movement, textures, feelings, etc. with its conceptual opposite such as, “Look at the car speeding by! It’s fast! And we are walking slow, so we can be careful. Fast and slow! Oh, there’s so much we can know!”

Book Babies: Wednesday @ 9:30am in Community Room

Ages 0 – 10 months

Toddler Time: Monday & Tuesday @ 9:30am in Community Room

Welcome Songs

Here We Are Together

Here we are together, together, together! Oh, here we are together in our library. There’s (sing names)… Here we are together in our library!

Hello Everybody

Hello everybody let’s clap our hands*, clap our hands, clap our hands. Hello everybody let’s clap our hands today! *pat our head, stretch up high, wiggle our fingers, tickle our knees, kick our feet, bounce up high!

S, T, R, W, P

(Sing while pointing to each finger on your child’s hand.) Sing, talk, read, write, play! Sing, talk, read write, play! Sing, talk, read, write, play! Sing, talk, read, write, play each day!

Sing, Talk, Read, Write, Play

TIP

Using concept words with your children helps to expand their vocabulary. Children need a large vocabulary to be able to learn to read and, just as important, to understand what they read. We want them to learn not only ice is cold and fire is hot, but also that hot and cold are opposites. Concept words show relationships between things.

Activity

Sing, “The Grand Old Duke of York.” You can do it as a knee bounce lifting baby up for “up” and sliding baby down on your legs for “down. Or you can read a book together that introduces concepts such as size, opposites, etc.

Happy or sad? Old or new? Empty or full? Pull a tab, and a bright green crocodile’s jaws go from shut to open, revealing a huge pink mouth lined with sharp white teeth. See that pretty little hummingbird? Flip a flap and a big long-necked ostrich takes its place. Now turn a wheel, and you’re in for a carnival ride, circling up and down. From noted novelty-book artist Robert Crowther comes a hands-on book that makes the concept of opposites crystal clear to even the youngest readers.

What's Up, Duck? A Book of Opposites by Tad Hills

In this ALA-ALSC Notable Children’s Book, Duck carries an oh so heavy Goose, while Thistle easily balances a light-as-a-feather feather. Thistle is one fast bird, but Duck is slooo-w. And when Duck is sound asleep, Goose is wide awake. With a simple text and colorful illustrations–plus the inimitable characters, of course–here’s a wonderful, and humorous, introduction to an important concept.

The Grand Old Duke of York

The Grand Old Duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.
And when they’re up, they’re up.
And when they’re down, they’re down.
And when they’re only halfway up
They’re neither up nor down.

Storytime: Frogs

Storytime: Frogs

Storytime: Frogs

We all know that a frog says, RIBBITT! But, did you also know that frogs “drink” through their skin? Or, that their eyes help them to swallow? “F” is for frogs, this month, so try talking with your child about the many different characteristics of frogs and why they are, not only fun, but an important part of an ecosystem.

Join us Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. or Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room.

Ages 2-5

Sing, Talk, Read, Write, Play

Tip

Children hear a letter sound most easily at the beginning of a word. When several words have the same beginning, it is called alliteration. A fun way to help children recognize beginning sounds is with tongue twisters. Hearing and saying tongue twisters help develop your child’s phonological awareness. Hearing the smaller sounds in words helps with later reading. Let’s try a tongue twister now.

Activity

Recite a tongue twister with your child, going slowly first and then faster.

Tad by Benji Davies

Meet Tad. She’s the smallest tadpole in a big pond. And she’s not frightened of Big Blub. Not. At. All. Growing up might take longer when you start at the bottom, but sometimes tiny hearts have the biggest dreams

Dear Treefrog by Joyce Sidman.

Dear Treefrog by Joyce Sidman

With magical, concise and perceptive poems, Newbery-Honor winning author Joyce Sidman captures the life of a tree frog in an intimate and moving way. A master of the science note, her fascinating sidebars help bind the twin poems together and ground our perspective. We learn how treefrogs have sticky toe pads, how they still themselves when in danger, how they can change from green to gray to camouflage themselves – even how they eat their own skins, which is full of nutrients. The narrator’s connection with this small creature brings solace, comfort, and a sense of mystery

Storytime: Farms

Let’s go to the farm and visit the animals! We live in a rural area with a lot of farm animals, so it is possible to get up close and personal with chickens, sheep, pigs, goats, and cows. If you have an opportunity, visit a farm or a fair and talk about the products animals provide, how the animals can “help” each other on the farm, and how to properly care for an animal.

Every day their goat escapes, and every day, Mr. Farmer brings him back. So when things start to go awry on the farm, it must be the goat’s fault. Who’s to blame when Mrs. Farmer’s petunias are trampled? Or when all the cupcakes for Archie’s party disappear? And when the whole bucket of paint is spilled? Of course, everyone blames the goat! But is it really his fault? Find out in this epic collaboration between Ann Patchett and Robin Preiss Glasser, who create this perfect picture book about telling the truth.
