Summer Reading
Ages 9 to 11
JUNE 8 through August 1
Pteranodon Tweens
- Readers have from June 8 to August 1 to complete reading goals of 20 minutes a day. There are three reading goals this year, one every two weeks (200 minutes per challenge).
- Any reading done before June 8th DOES NOT COUNT towards summer reading challenges.
- You must have your initialed paper log OR have logged your reading online.
- You must choose either paper or online for the duration of the program, you cannot go back and forth.
- You may use Junior Fiction (JF), Junior Graphic Novels (JG), Tween Fiction (TW), and Tween Graphic Novels (TWG).
- Digital books and audios are also allowed. Your adult can get Libby for free through their app store. Learn how to use it at our Digital Items page or have your adult come talk to a librarian.
- Each Pteranodon Reading Goal has additional activities or challenges you can choose to do in place of TWO 20-minute reading sessions per week; each one may be used only once per challenge. You could do them all for fun! In Beanstack, make sure you log 20 minutes of reading under the “LOGGING” badge area for each additional activity completed!
- Then… come to the Madison Library District lobby when you have completed a Pteranodon Tweens Reading Goal to receive a prize. You can collect a new prize every two weeks!
- Get prizes on OR after the dates listed below.
Program may not be repeated! Only 1 set of prizes per person per summer.
NO PRIZES will be given after Saturday, August 1, 2026.
Prizes
You can read ahead of schedule, but prizes won’t be available until their release date. If you miss a week, you can collect it the next time.
For example, if you come in July 6, and haven’t gotten any prizes yet, you can pick up prize number 1 and 2. If you’ve read past that point, and are ready for prize 3, you’ll have to wait until July 20 to get that next prize.
Prizes will be available any time after their first availability date until August 1, while supplies last.

No Child Left Behind, and No Child Left Inside!
The Youth Explorer Passes from Idaho State Parks will waive the entry fee for one vehicle for one day to any Idaho state park.

- Try making rock candy at home.
- Go on a walk and look for cool rocks.
- Make your own invisible ink and write a message.

America 250th

- Test if you can name all 50 states.
- Make underwater fireworks with food coloring and oil.
- Attend a city America 250 event as a family.
Week 4 Activities
Digging for Information
- Attend/complete a Summer STEM from your Library activity.
- Ready, Set… RECHARGE! Complete an activity in the guidebook & pick-up your FREE brag tag from the business.
- Create prehistoric landscapes and dinosaurs with blocks or LEGO bricks.
- Have a family game night.
- Make a favorite recipe with your family.
Week 5 Activities
Paleontology
- Attend/complete a Summer STEM from your Library activity.

- Make your own fossils with salt dough.
- Play dinosaur trivia with friends or family.
- Go outside and make giant bubbles.

- Try carefully excavating chocolate chips from a cookie.

Chess and Game Club

Unplug and connect at the library's game club! It's the perfect place to hang out, meet new people, and play some awesome games. We'll have chess sets ready for players of all abilities, plus a rotating selection of board games and card games. No experience needed—just a desire to have fun.
Open to everyone ages 9-18.
Water Mancala Tournament!
MONDAY, June 22, at 4:00 pm
For Teens and Tweens ages 9 – 18.
We wanted to do something a little different then usual and do an outside mancala game using squishy balls, buckets with water, and running around. It should be a lot of fun!
Star Party!

Come out and gaze at the stars! We’ll have our big telescope set up, and Cathy Stanton, former Star Ranger, will be there to take you on a guided tour through the universe.

"Accidentally Wes Anderson"
Photo Contest

For those aged 15 and older
Film director Wes Anderson has a distinctive style that many attempt to mimic. A recent book, Accidentally Wes Anderson, shares views of the best efforts by professional photographers. If all those pros are having such a good time making Wes Anderson fakes, we thought it might be fun for our patrons to do so as well.
Take a look at the style hints found in the adult section display case and take a photo that you think is "Accidentally Wes Anderson," and we'll display them during the month of November.

Email your photo to our programming team or leave it at the Circulation Desk by November 1.
Please include your name, library card number, and phone number.
The three photos judged to be closest to Anderson's style will receive a copy of the book.
